10 Great DIY Alternatives to Bunting

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with bunting (especially not the insanely beautiful work of The Big Beautiful Bunting Co. but as far as wedding DIYs go, the neat pastel fabric triangle bunting is fairly ubiquitous. If you are looking for something else that you can create and string together to make your wedding venue look amazing, then look no further for some great DIY wedding garland ideas.

First up, yarn tassels.

Now, I’m biased because this is what I had at my wedding, but I think these are pretty awesome. They are time-consuming, so if you are going to go with these, and you want more than a few metres, I’d strongly suggest getting some help.

What's great about using yarn is that there's no colour transfer and you can use them again and again. I’ll post a tutorial for the above garland another time, but in the meantime, this one from Jacks & Kate is good.

Fabric strips also look fab and have the advantage of being much super quick to create. Photo from Cluck Cluck Sew.

You can also make them out of tissue paper. I love these super-colourful DIY tassels from Anna & Blue.

While we are on tissue paper, these colourful tassel flags from Hostess With The Mostess look pretty straightforward, and I think you could build the meters quite quickly.

I adore this crepe paper foliage garland from The House that Lars Built. You'll need a sewing machine for this and the next few.

Next up is this gorgeous paper triangle bunting from Oh Happy Day. FYI, there are loads of great party tutorials on that site, it's well worth a visit.

I'm a big fan of felt balls, and this tutorial from DIY Candy for a felt ball garland also tells you how to make the balls themselves. Bonus.

And finally... everyone's favourite, the Pom Pom garland. This is another one that looks totally amazing but has potential to take a while. You can always short cut by using ready made pom poms. Photo from Art Bar Blog.
